Nannas for Native Forests https://www.facebookcom/Nannas4NativeForests/ has grown organically and very quickly since its inception in September 2020. 

Elders in the community were prompted to act due to:

• the realisation that many West Australians believe that our publicly owned State forests are protected from logging under legislation passed (using the problematic "Old Growth" definition) in 2001 by the then Gallop government;
• the increasingly obvious effects of climate change and an understanding of the importance of forests in regulating climate (as well as storing carbon, protecting biodiversity, cycling water, controlling erosion and supporting industries such as tourism and honey production, that are not destructive to the forest ecosystem);
• concern for future generations if these best and most efficient carbon sinks we have were to disappear due to the combined effects of repeated logging, a drying climate and drought.

Our goal is to end ALL native forest logging in Western Australia. We are non-aligned politically, but realise that this will ultimately be a political decision, so encourage political discourse. We work closely with the WA Forest Alliance and fully support the intent of their Forests for Life plan for transition to plantation timber production and agro-forestry.

We seek change by informing and educating the community on what is happening to our native forests (through conversation, letter writing, singing, Facebook and media exposure), however, we consider the situation to be desperate enough that we do not hesitate to engage in minor unlawful activities if we feel we will gain by doing so. Although Nannas lead the charge and are frontline and centre stage of all our actions, we welcome and need women and men of all ages to join in to help us.
